Metropole Megatherium – The city of no edge
Sending the drone up I was expecting the usual thing: a skyline, a center, suburbs fading toward some kind of edge. But there was no. The city just kept going.
Roads divided into other roads. Towers gathered into larger clusters, disappeared beneath the haze, then rose again farther out. Somewhere below, elevated lines crossed highways, market districts pressed against residential blocks, and entire neighborhoods seemed to exist beneath other neighborhoods.
Then I took the drone lower
Within a few blocks, the wide avenues narrowed into passages between older apartment buildings. Air-conditioning units hung above market stalls. Electrical cables crossed the street in black webs. Now, the drone was att street level, close enough to make out faces in the crowds.
Suddenly the controls on my screen stopped responding. Something was definitely wrong.
The next moment I was no longer looking through my screen.
I was standing out there in the street.
Cars honked.
And a soft rain had begun to drift.
